If there’s one truth about beauty products, it’s that they have a way of making you connect with them emotionally. The smell of that lotion your mother always used, or the cologne your father spritzed on every morning, can come to hold a special place in your heart as you grow older. And when it comes to the makeup, skincare and hair care products that we personally used as teenagers, the attachment is real. Now, it could be because they’re just worked beautifully for us ever since we first tried them, or simply because we’ve grown so used to them, but they’ve made themselves pretty indispensable in our kits ever since. Here are 15 beauty products that’ve found prime real estate on the shelves of the Vogue India team.
“Unlike most of my classmates in school, I wasn’t allowed to use too many makeup products as a teen, but one thing that my mom did let me indulge in (only for special occasions at the time) was Clinique’s Superbalanced Makeup foundation. As a kid with moody, acne-prone skin, nothing made me happier than swiping it on and watching my skin magically even out in front of the mirror. The fact that Clinique’s skin range is unscented, oil-free and feels light as air on the face made it thrice as comfortable for me to use even as an adolescent. More than a decade since I bought my first bottle, I’m still a fan of the brand’s foundations. Nothing else works as well!” – Nitya Chablani, digital features editor, Vogue.in
“While I didn’t have terrible acne growing up, my combination skin ensured that it acted up exactly when there was a social event lined up. The Body Shop Seaweed Deep Cleansing Gel Wash was a beauty department store find in the sixth or seventh grade, and is still the best face wash from my skin type—and I say this after testing a lot of them, amongst all kinds of formulas, thanks to my job.” – Anjan Sachar, beauty writer, Vogue.in
“If I had to pick one, it has to be my cherry-flavoured chapstick!” – Heidi Volpe, creative director, Vogue India
“My love for makeup that lends a glow started way back—I’d pick the L’Oréal Paris Glam Shine Lip Gloss in the Gold Cappuccino colour.” – Priyanka Parkash, fashion coordinator and stylist, Vogue India
“The Lakmé Insta-Liner Eye Liner, the black one in a glass bottle has been my go-to makeup product.” – Anaita Shroff Adajania, fashion director, Vogue India
“While a single product hasn’t really stood out for me, my grandmother used the Pond’s Cold Cream her entire life. Literally, all of it.” – Divya Jagwani, fashion bookings editor, Vogue India
“I’d pick the Fabulous Face Cleanser by Aesop. Been using it for almost ten years and it makes me look Fabio-lous!” – Fabio Immediato, senior fashion editor, Vogue India
“I have been using Artistry’s Cleanser, Toner and Moisturiser since I was 13 years old. I would often have severe acne breakouts, so my mother insisted I started using it. After noticing the dramatic improvement it brought to my skin, including the glow and smoothness, I knew this will be one set of products I will swear by all my life. After so many years, today I have literally forgotten what acne feels like.” – Saahil Singh Yaduvanshi, digital video producer, Vogue.in
“I discovered the joys of French pharmacy pretty early on in life. Growing up, I didn’t have to battle acne (lucky me!) but I did struggle with dry skin and eczema. My sensitive skin suffered from frequent mood swings and could go from dry and dehydrated to angry and inflamed under 60 seconds. When I discovered thermal spring water, it was life changing—I was so happy that something as simple as water could calm and soothe my cranky complexion. But the dryness only got worse with age. A kind British lady at Boots in London pointed me towards the blue and white La Roche Posay aisle and I knew I had hit the jackpot. Toleriane Riche and I have been inseparable ever since. It’s rich, creamy, crazy nourishing and keeps my skin happy. You’ll find one in my bag, in the bathroom, at bedside with at least two spare tubes in event of an out-of-stock emergency or an apocalypse.” – Nidhi Sharma Punjabi, beauty editor, Vogue India
“The Aussie Hair Frizz Fixer Shampoo has stuck by me throughout.” – Renuka Joshi Modi, managing editor, Vogue India
“It was my first year of college, a lot of new beginnings and discoveries, including my first love—my first true red. M.A.C’s Ruby Woo Lipstick—my most prized possession at the time. I wore it for special occasions, days I needed that something extra. We were inseparable. It’s a classic with a cult following for a reason—I may now have at least 38 variations of red in my beauty cupboard, but I’ll still reach out for my Ruby Woo every once in a while. It continues to be special. And you know what they say about first love, it never fades… pun intended.” – Sneha Mankani, junior beauty editor, Vogue India
